Career Opportunities In Horticulture

One of the options that you have after completing you Class XII is pursuing B.Sc. in Horticulture. It is the science which deals with the science of cultivation of flowers, vegetable, fruits, herbs, shrubs, bushes, ornamental trees and landscaping for gardens greenhouses, gardens, orchards and plantations and also floriculture or cultivation of flowers. There are further some subjects that are studied under the course which deals; such as vegetable science, production harvesting, landscape architecture, plantation crops, floriculture.
The term “horticulture” comprises the cultivation of fruits and vegetables, ornamental flowers, medicinal and aromatic plants and their post-harvest management. Presently our country is next to China in area and production of fruits and vegetable crops and has been contributing 10% of fruits and 14% of vegetable of the total world production. India leads the world in the production of mango, banana, sapota, acid lime and cauliflower while the highest productivity of grape is also recorded here. India occupies the second position in the production of onion and third in cabbage production globally. Fruits such as mango, banana, citrus, guava and apple account for 75 percent of the total fruit production in the country. India produces about 70 different varieties of various vegetables. The horticulture sector constituted nearly 20 percent of agricultural GDP and contributes 4 percent to the national economy. Despite having all the favourable factors, the desired level of development in horticulture has not been achieved because of a number of constraints like low productivity of many fruits and vegetables than international averages. Nonavailability of good planting material, lack of post harvest management and less value addition etc.. As of today, horticulture is considered, one of the fastest growing sectors in agriculture and is a thrust area to stimulate agricultural growth, spurred by the changing domestic food habits towards more nutritious food and increasing overseas demand. The area and production under horticulture crops were 12.77 million hectares and 96.56 million tonnes respectively during 1991-92 after that a huge spurt in horticulture has arisen and it reached to 20.66 million the area and 223.8 mt productions by 2010 (NHB).

MBA Students Must Avoid These Mistakes

Opting for a Master of Business Administration (MBA) course opens great avenues for management aspirants. An MBA degree helps in getting better job prospects and better designations. However, all this doesn’t come with just getting enrolled to an MBA course – a student must know how to make the most of this opportunity. Many students fail to do the same, and repent at a later stage. If you too are one of the students enrolled in MBA or planning to do so, here are a few common mistakes you should avoid.

Not choosing the right specialisation and college

Not choosing the right specialisation and college can make a major difference to the rest of your career journey. Selecting the right specialisation, and most importantly, a college that offers expert knowledge on the specialization is of utmost importance. Before selecting a specialisation, make sure you are clear about your career options, and choose a specialisation accordingly. Once you have decided on the specialisation, conduct a thorough research on the colleges imparting expert knowledge on your preferred specialization. To be very sure of the institute you are choosing, go through its official website carefully, visit the campus, gather information about the lecturers, have a look at the curriculum, and interact with the alumni.

Not focusing from Day 1

Once the admission season is over, many students sit back, relax and focus more on enjoying college life. Here, students must note that only securing a seat in a top B-school will not make them successful – they will have to work hard towards achieving their respective goals, and this starts from Day 1. Start focusing from the very first day and excel in studies.

Taking practical sessions and trainings lightly

There is nothing better than gaining practical knowledge. Keeping this in mind, practical sessions and trainings can help a student immensely. Every student must understand the importance of participating in trainings and internships. Being a part of these can help a student in building good contacts that can lead to job opportunities. Also, at times, on the basis of their respective performances, many students are hired as full-time employees once they are done with their internships. Thus, it is extremely important to pay attention to trainings and internships.

Not focusing on building networks

Building networks can help you achieve great heights. Some networks might help you learn new things while some might be of professional help at the later stage – make sure you meet people and build good contacts with them. Often, colleges invite guest speakers for conducting lectures – meet these guests and stay in touch with them.

Not focusing much on improving communication and language skills

Half of the battle is won when you are able to communicate your thoughts clearly to the person in front of you. Many MBA students often forget about the important of communication and language skills and focus on the key topics taught during the program. However, along with the curriculum, students must also focus on how they can improve their communication and language skills.

Avoiding the above mentioned mistakes can help an MBA student immensely, and can result in a fruitful career ahead.

CAT 2016: Simple tips to optimize exam preparation

India’s biggest management entrance test of the year, CAT 2016, is just four months away and the aspirants are immersed in preparations. This year, CAT 2016 is scheduled to be held on December 4 and with back-to-back coaching classes and hours of revisions, self-study and attempting mock tests, aspirants are leaving no stone unturned to score maximum marks.

They are solving sample question papers, taking mock tests and reading books, keys, guides and topper accounts for tips and trick to crack CAT 2016. But amid this urgency, the aspirants tend to overlook certain important things that affect their performance in a significant manner.

Your daily routine can play a huge role in your preparation and eventually in your performance in the final exam. Here we list a few things you need to pay attention to.

A Good Night’s Sleep: A good night’s sleep is essential for everybody. More so for students, as the key here is sharp memory and alertness. Experts say it is important to sleep for a minimum of 8 hours in the night so at to be fully energized, alert and attentive in the day time. To ensure there’s no daytime fatigue, you must fix a time of your sleep. Sleep and wake up at the same time every day. This routine will fix your body clock and optimize the quality of your sleep. The better your sleep, the better you will be able to concentrate on CAT preparation. There’s no point in burning the midnight oil if you can’t recall in the morning what you studied at night.

Healthy Diet: To be able to optimize your exam preparation you have to be fully fit. Along with sleep, you need to watch your diet. Avoid fried and fatty food as they tend to induce lethargy. Add fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet for protein, vitamins, and other important minerals. Dark leafy vegetables, fish, berries, walnuts, and food rich in omega-3 fatty acids are good for the brain. Also, avoid eating out to prevent an upset stomach or any sort of illness that may hamper your studies.

Recreational Activities:
While there is no argument on the fact that you should dedicate your maximum time towards studies, we would like to emphasize that ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.’ Too many hours of solving LRDI questions and wracking your brain over Quant problems etc. can slow you down. Take a break and engage in some recreational activity. Listen to music or watch your favourite cartoon show. Or take an hour off to play video games or any outdoor game to rejuvenate yourself. Basically, take some time off and do whatever energises you and refreshes your mind and then get back to preparations with renewed vigour.

It is also important for you to practice some kind of physical exercise to keep away from laziness and lethargy.

Besides these three main lifestyle activities, you also need to pay attention to other small details like your study table, lighting system at your place of study and place and the time of studying.

Study Desk: Make sure your study table and chair are at the right height which supports your posture as wrong posture can lead to discomfort which can affect your concentration. You also need to ensure that your seating arrangement is not causing back pain to you. Don’t study continuously for long hours. Take small breaks of 5-10 minutes in between. This way you will be able to give rest to your eyes and brain too.

Lighting System: Long hours of study can severely affect your eyes. Tiredness of eyes is common to all of us. That’s why your study area should be well lit. It should be neither too bright nor dim. Try to study in natural light as much as possible. It provides a soothing effect that’s absent in artificial lights.

Time And Place Of Study: Since studying is going to be your main occupation for the next four months, you need to create the right environment for it, free from noise and disturbances. Set up your study area away from your living room, where family members watch TV, listen to music or converse with each other. Don’t study in a room which invites noise from outside.

Also, you need to set a time table for studying. Experts say, early morning is the best time to study new concepts and solving problems as the mind is fresh after sleep. Post-dinner study time is good for revision and studying relatively lighter topics.

Stay Away From Phone: Last but not the least, stay away from your smartphone, IPad and other gadgets that have the potential to distract you.

Implement these few things and see the result. All the best for CAT 2016!

Top Business Analytics Programs in India

 Here are the rankings:

1. Certified Program in Business Analytics (CBA) – Indian School of Business:

The offering from Indian School of Business (ISB) continues to retain the top spot in this year rankings as well. The course covers several topics and is run in a format where the students have to attend class rooms every alternate month. The course uses technology aided platform during the months of no classroom. There is ample industry interaction and a 3 – 6 month project at the end of the course. With the ISB brand and tie-up with SAS, the course provides almost everything a person would have wished for!

I say almost because the only thing which goes against the course is considerably higher fees compared to other courses. Add the expense of travelling to Hyderabad every alternate month and you might end up thinking twice, even if you get selected for the program.

2. PGPBA – Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai and Gurgaon

Great Lakes arrived with its analytics programme slightly late into the game, but when it came – it came in style! It comes closest to challenge ISB with its focus on structured thinking and business application. The format is again a mix of classroom and tech aided platform. Significant industry interaction, tie-up with Jigsaw Academy to deliver online content and option to choose from 2 destination are some of the reasons why this course makes it to this spot.

My discontent with this course is mainly the lack of focus on a particular tool. While tool is only a means to an end, depth on at least one tool would make the offering very compelling. You can read detailed review about the program here.

3. Certificate program in business analytics for executives (CPBAE)- IIM Lucknow

This course is taught jointly by faculty from IIM Lucknow and Kelley School of Business. The course is divided in 4 modules and requires a residency in each module. In addition, there is a tie-up with SAS for E-Miner training at the end. The positives for the course include 2 (or 3 if you take up SAS training) big brands backing it up with a wide range of topics.

The main discontent with the past participants of the programme has been the gap between what is taught in the classroom and what is required on the job. As per discussions with one of past participants (with 6 years of experience in IT before taking this course) “The focus on practical aspects and applications needs to be higher.”

4. Executive Programme in Business Analytics – IIM Kolkata

The course is spread over a year and is divided in 10 modules. With only 2 visits on the campus, majority of the course is delivered through Hughes Education. While the programme has lower work experience requirement compared to some of the counter parts, relatively lower class room interactions make it a less desired choice. Again, the focus is on covering a range of topics and the theory behind them as opposed to practical applications on the job.

5. Business analytics and Intelligence – IIM Bangalore

IIM Bangalore was probably the pioneer in starting the one year executive programme in Analytics. This course is again a mix of classroom and online platform, with an optional module to cover SAS E-Miner at the end. The positives include a course which covers wide range of algorithms and topics and is backed by the brand of an IIM.

Post Graduate Programme, Praxis Business School, Kolkata

Praxis gets brownie points for taking a different approach to solving the talent gap. A full time programme which is open to freshers as well as professionals with experience and is probably the only one which takes ownership to solve for placements of students by its industry tie-ups. So, if you have relatively low work experience and can afford to take a break, this might be a good choice.

CPEE- Big Data Analytics & Optimization-International School of Engineering (INSOFE)

INSOFE has not only crafted a niche by focusing on Big Data and Optimization. It also has tie-ups with universities in the United States. A few students are sent to these universities as part of their tie-up. So, if you want to learn Big Data Analytics or aim to settle down in the US, this might be the preferred route.

Note – How have we ranked these programs?

We have used the similar framework, which we use to rank all the programs on our trainings page. It is based on 4 parameters:

Coverage of the course: Coverage refers to the breadth of material covered during the program. Do the programmes cover aspects like structured thinking? Advanced topics like Big Data? Data Visualization tools and methods. The broader the coverage, the higher the score on this attribute.
Quality of the content: Quality of content refers to depth of the core topics in the program. In takes into account factors like industry interaction, pedigree of the faculty, time spent on class room interaction etc.
Industry Recognition: This refers to the recognition a program has earned in the analytics industry – it is somewhat synonymous with the brand value of the course. Since we are looking at long duration courses, this recognition would reflect in placements of the candidates
Value for money : Once we have the score on all these parameters, we weigh them up and compute overall score:
Program effectiveness score = a x Coverage score + b x Quality score + c x Brand score + d x Value score

End Notes:

Hope these rankings and information would help our readers in making the right choices about their career. If you have been part of any of these courses or want to add further information, please feel free to add it through comments below or on the individual course pages.
