The job market is improving, but still highly competitive. You must work harder to demonstrate you’re worth a second look. According to Forbes, each job opening will generate 120 applicants and 80% of these will never land an interview. If you’re not getting invitations to interview, the likely culprit is your résumé. Try these five tips to focus on what you should take out of your résumé for better results:

Add a profile, delete the objective

The objective section is passé. If it doesn’t align with what the employer wants, you’ll be passed over. Your résumé should address employer needs – not yours. Replace the objective with a profile section that serves as a summary of what you offer. It’s your elevator pitch – a quick “why me.” Profiles are far more appealing than a statement of what you want from your career. Make it clear at a glance that you’re a contender to consider and not just eager to land any job.

Show what you accomplished, not what you did

Rethink how you present prior jobs. Writing “processed accounts receivables” is not gripping. “Implemented a new system to shorten the collections cycle by 10 days” is. Don’t show how you functioned, show what you achieved. Most job titles offer potential employers a general idea of your role. Customer service rep or sales associate are self-explanatory titles. No need to elaborate. Show how you performed above expectations and benefited the company to sell your value-add.

Eliminate 10-20% of your content

One essential writing tip is to edit out roughly 20% of what you wrote. This wisdom also applies to your résumé – it should be tight with no fluff. Revising your entries to show accomplishments should knock out excess verbiage. At mid-career on up, a two page resume is acceptable. For entry level to mid-level, your resume shouldn’t exceed one concisely written page. The shorter the resume, the more likely it will be fully read and that your skills will stand out.

Improve scrollability

Nothing is more of a turn off, aside from glaring typos, than eye-numbing huge blocks of text. Headers, bullets and less content greatly improve scrollability and allow the reader to see what’s impressive about you at a glance. Your profile is the overview and a quick scroll down should provide supporting information to back up your selling points. Aim for no more than five or six lines of text in any one spot. Revise, try it out on a your next application, then revise again until you optimize.

Omit the irrelevant

A résumé is not your life’s story. It is appropriate to edit your experience so long as you don’t take unethical liberties. Adding jobs you never had or skipping five years of work history is ill-advised but omitting skills the employer isn’t looking for is apt. A marketing internship or unrelated software skills won’t matter for a paralegal position. One step further is to tweak your résumé for each application. Be sure to save versions and note which you submitted to each job for continuity when interviewing.

Ships, perhaps the most ancient mode of transport, have a charm which is unmatched even by the fastest aircraft of today. It is a marine engineer who manages the enormous propellant power and the intricate machinery of a ship, helping it cross an ocean within days.

Marine engineers are responsible for designing on-board systems such as:

For those who are not called away from the sea by family commitments, the top rung of the ladder is the post of chief engineer. A marine engineer may become chief engineer, but, never a captain, without a degree in nautical science. To become a captain, one has to do a three-year degree programme in nautical science after 10+2, then take an all-India entrance exam and subsequent exams conducted by the government of India. However, both the paths are parallel with respect to remuneration and career progression.

A marine engineer normally sails for 15-20 years. After the age of 40, people usually take up shore jobs, which may be in shipyards, maritime universities or in management of a shipping company.

IIM Bangalore launches healthcare management course in a tie-up with Apollo

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) and Apollo Medskills have launched a Certificate Programme in General Management for the Healthcare professionals.

The programme has been well received by the healthcare sector and has attracted a large number of applications from a highly competent pool of aspirants from various sections of the healthcare industry. The healthcare management programme will be inaugurated today (August 2).

Great Lakes arrived with its analytics programme slightly late into the game, but when it came – it came in style! It comes closest to challenge ISB with its focus on structured thinking and business application. The format is again a mix of classroom and tech aided platform. Significant industry interaction, tie-up with Jigsaw Academy to deliver online content and option to choose from 2 destination are some of the reasons why this course makes it to this spot.

3. Certificate program in business analytics for executives (CPBAE)- IIM Lucknow

This course is taught jointly by faculty from IIM Lucknow and Kelley School of Business. The course is divided in 4 modules and requires a residency in each module. In addition, there is a tie-up with SAS for E-Miner training at the end. The positives for the course include 2 (or 3 if you take up SAS training) big brands backing it up with a wide range of topics.

The main discontent with the past participants of the programme has been the gap between what is taught in the classroom and what is required on the job. As per discussions with one of past participants (with 6 years of experience in IT before taking this course) “The focus on practical aspects and applications needs to be higher.”

4. Executive Programme in Business Analytics – IIM Kolkata

The course is spread over a year and is divided in 10 modules. With only 2 visits on the campus, majority of the course is delivered through Hughes Education. While the programme has lower work experience requirement compared to some of the counter parts, relatively lower class room interactions make it a less desired choice. Again, the focus is on covering a range of topics and the theory behind them as opposed to practical applications on the job.

5. Business analytics and Intelligence – IIM Bangalore

IIM Bangalore was probably the pioneer in starting the one year executive programme in Analytics. This course is again a mix of classroom and online platform, with an optional module to cover SAS E-Miner at the end. The positives include a course which covers wide range of algorithms and topics and is backed by the brand of an IIM.

Praxis gets brownie points for taking a different approach to solving the talent gap. Procedure / Guidelines to Join NDA

• You have to crack written entrance exam of NDA (National Defence Academy).
• This exam is one of the Indian Defence Service exams and this exam is conducted by UPSC two times every year.

• You have to complete Intermediate examination with Physics & Maths but you are from arts so you have to choose only army wings at the time of admission because only this is for arts students.
• The NDA exam notification will be published in last week of December so you will have to check official time to time. 
• After cracking UPSC NDA written test, you are eligible for SSB interview for final selection.
• The UPSC is completely responsible for the finance for conducting the entrance exam and for providing the guidelines for selection from the entrance. (NDA Sample Paper)
• For Army service the candidates should have passed plus two or equivalent tests conducted by the state government
• The examination is out of 900 marks. Paper I maths 300 and and Paper II General Ability 600
• In short the procedures of NDA are a written exam, SSB interview, and a medical test

 The candidate should be free from any underweight, bodily defects and obese. The training    duration  for the qualified applicants are as follows:

• For naval cadets: 3 years at NDA along with 1 year at naval Academy
• For Army candidates: I year at NDA and I year at the IMA
• For naval candidates: along with 1 year at NDA 1 ½ years at AFA Hyderabad.

 Note : Females are not eligible to join NDA.

5 Tips To Crack UPSC IAS Pre

The Civil Services Preliminary examination to be conducted by the Union Public Services Examination is believed to be the toughest stage in the whole process of an IAS selection. Out of 100 candidates, who write the Prelims, 97 may not clear prelims owing to two main reasons:
Only a few vacancies

Lack of right approach

The exam is scheduled to be held on August 7. The total number of applicants is 9.5 lakh out of which the number of candidates who qualify for second stage (mains) will be only around 15,000. Around a million applicants fight to find a place in the top 15000 positions which makes prelims stage certainly not a cake-walk. But, if you are a serious candidate, embrace right strategies, guidance and study material, self-study is enough.

Out of the 9.5 lakh applicants, only half sit for Prelims!

Out of the 9.5 lakh candidates, who register for Civil Services Prelims Exam, usually, only half of them take the Preliminary exam on D-day. This is still a bigger number considering the number of vacancies. Around 15,000-16,000 candidates (12-13 times the number of vacancies) will be selected for next round, i.e. Civil services Mains exam. This means only the top 3 per cent of candidates will get through the exam.

How to Prepare for Civil Services Preliminary Examination?

So, it's important to map out a potent strategy so that you clear the IAS prelims and be in top 15000. Clearing prelims will turn out to be a cakewalk if the aspirant gets proper guidance and orientation.

1. GS Paper 1 is the key now: Revise every subject!

Till 2014, scoring high in GS Paper 2 (popularly known as CSAT) was the easiest and fastest way to crack Civil Services Prelims. Putting less effort as compared to GS Paper 1, aspirants used to score high in this paper and cleared prelims. But, with changes in the UPSC pattern in 2015 this strategy won't work in the future.


On the basic level, covering every subject of civil services preliminary exam is the best approach to clear prelims now. It's not recommended to give priority to any particular book or area thinking that questions will come from that source. Likewise, it's equally important not to miss easy questions from traditional subjects like Economics, Geography, History and Polity. At least, brushing up NCERT books and previous years' question papers would be a good idea if you are time-crunched. Keeping an eye on tight competition, areas like culture and environment should also be mugged up. Current affairs preparation should be done considering the latest schemes and bills launched by the government.

2. Take, Clear IAS prelims mock exams:

This is one area which tells apart successful candidates from those who fail to crack prelims. Mock tests are integral part of regular preparations of successful candidates. By revising the attempted tests you get a chance to identify your mistakes. Writing mock tests arm you with confidence which is the key to success in any examination.

3. Invest on the right books for UPSC Civil Service Preliminary Exam:

Picking up recommended books and right study material is of utmost importance. The NCERT books are thought to be must-read by experts as well as successful candidates, as they clear up doubts at fundamental level and help candidates in scoring higher marks at both stages of Civil Services Examination - Prelims and Mains.

4. Follow our Prelims cum Mains Approach:

For GS Paper 1, an ideal strategy would be to cover GS Mains and Prelims syllabus in detail first that would give the concept clarity about all major topics. The type of questions asked in Prelims and Mains are different, but there are many areas where there is overlap too. An integrated prelims-cum-mains approach is catching on among civil services aspirants which rely on clearing prelims and mains in a single attempt. Good knowledge of overlapping and non-overlapping areas in the UPSC GS syllabus for Prelims and Mains certainly gets you competitive mileage over your peers.

5. Go with a relaxed mind on the exam day:

All your efforts will go in vain if you lose your cool on the exam day. It's pertinent to read questions carefully and make sure that you do not make silly mistakes. In a relaxed state of mind, you will be able to answer questions accurately and in less time.
