5 Tips To Crack UPSC IAS Pre

The Civil Services Preliminary examination to be conducted by the Union Public Services Examination is believed to be the toughest stage in the whole process of an IAS selection. Out of 100 candidates, who write the Prelims, 97 may not clear prelims owing to two main reasons:
Only a few vacancies

Lack of right approach

The exam is scheduled to be held on August 7. The total number of applicants is 9.5 lakh out of which the number of candidates who qualify for second stage (mains) will be only around 15,000. Around a million applicants fight to find a place in the top 15000 positions which makes prelims stage certainly not a cake-walk. But, if you are a serious candidate, embrace right strategies, guidance and study material, self-study is enough.

Out of the 9.5 lakh applicants, only half sit for Prelims!

Out of the 9.5 lakh candidates, who register for Civil Services Prelims Exam, usually, only half of them take the Preliminary exam on D-day. This is still a bigger number considering the number of vacancies. Around 15,000-16,000 candidates (12-13 times the number of vacancies) will be selected for next round, i.e. Civil services Mains exam. This means only the top 3 per cent of candidates will get through the exam.

How to Prepare for Civil Services Preliminary Examination?

So, it's important to map out a potent strategy so that you clear the IAS prelims and be in top 15000. Clearing prelims will turn out to be a cakewalk if the aspirant gets proper guidance and orientation.

1. GS Paper 1 is the key now: Revise every subject!

Till 2014, scoring high in GS Paper 2 (popularly known as CSAT) was the easiest and fastest way to crack Civil Services Prelims. Putting less effort as compared to GS Paper 1, aspirants used to score high in this paper and cleared prelims. But, with changes in the UPSC pattern in 2015 this strategy won't work in the future.

On the basic level, covering every subject of civil services preliminary exam is the best approach to clear prelims now. It's not recommended to give priority to any particular book or area thinking that questions will come from that source. Likewise, it's equally important not to miss easy questions from traditional subjects like Economics, Geography, History and Polity. At least, brushing up NCERT books and previous years' question papers would be a good idea if you are time-crunched. Keeping an eye on tight competition, areas like culture and environment should also be mugged up. Current affairs preparation should be done considering the latest schemes and bills launched by the government.

2. Take, Clear IAS prelims mock exams:

This is one area which tells apart successful candidates from those who fail to crack prelims. Mock tests are integral part of regular preparations of successful candidates. By revising the attempted tests you get a chance to identify your mistakes. Writing mock tests arm you with confidence which is the key to success in any examination.

3. Invest on the right books for UPSC Civil Service Preliminary Exam:

Picking up recommended books and right study material is of utmost importance. The NCERT books are thought to be must-read by experts as well as successful candidates, as they clear up doubts at fundamental level and help candidates in scoring higher marks at both stages of Civil Services Examination - Prelims and Mains.

4. Follow our Prelims cum Mains Approach:

For GS Paper 1, an ideal strategy would be to cover GS Mains and Prelims syllabus in detail first that would give the concept clarity about all major topics. The type of questions asked in Prelims and Mains are different, but there are many areas where there is overlap too. An integrated prelims-cum-mains approach is catching on among civil services aspirants which rely on clearing prelims and mains in a single attempt. Good knowledge of overlapping and non-overlapping areas in the UPSC GS syllabus for Prelims and Mains certainly gets you competitive mileage over your peers.

5. Go with a relaxed mind on the exam day:

All your efforts will go in vain if you lose your cool on the exam day. It's pertinent to read questions carefully and make sure that you do not make silly mistakes. In a relaxed state of mind, you will be able to answer questions accurately and in less time. Count on your abilities and be confident that you can clear civil services preliminary exam, and you will.

Best Wishes!!!

Amazing Career in Interior Designing

Who This Career is For?

This career is for those people who are passionate about design and are artistic. Since this career involves designing homes/properties, and then executing those designs to create the environment that the client wants, the person should have excellent management and communication skills, as well as be creative with his/her work.

Those people who are good at maintaining their spending according to a budget as well as people who have a good knowledge about various materials are people who should defiantly be looking at interior designing as a potential career path. Moreover, people who have an eye for detail and enjoys solving puzzles would be an ideal interior designer.

Want to know more about it?

Interior designer is not new to us, as all our lives we have been organizing and designing the places around us. Interior designing is basically shaping the look of an area to create a pleasing aesthetic for the client.

There are many areas that the interior designer may want to specialize in such as residential (houses, flats, canal boats, and anywhere else used for domestic accommodation), workplaces (includes factories, offices, and any number of other settings), temporary exhibition designing (museums, galleries, and a wide range of other private and public settings), commercial (includes retail shops and shopping malls, warehouses, conference centers), leisure (cinemas, theatres, and gyms), hospitality (hotels, restaurants, pubs, cafes, and nightclubs), education (schools and universities), healthcare (local health centers, hospitals, nursing and care homes, and private clinics).

A typical cycle of an interior designer involves many processes. Firstly, the interior designer meets with the clients and discusses the needs of the client, the budget and time available to complete the project. Initial ideas are presented to the clients as well as visiting the site area. After determining the client’s needs, the interior designer needs to research what he/she wants to do with that space. The interior decorator should consider building regulations, planning considerations etc. while researching.

After this a proposal needs to be created which will include producing sketches and a detailed outline of what the interior designer plans to do with the space, as well as patterns and designs that he/she intends on using. The costs and timescale are then monitored to make sure that everything is going according to plan. The next step is for the interior designer to select a group of contractors and suppliers based on the budget.

After the suppliers and contractors are selected, work on the project begins and the on site supervision starts. When the work is complete, the client is shown the final result as well as updating them on the use of the space; the maintenance needed as well as any safety issues that they have to keep in mind. If the client has any problems or is not happy with the work done, the interior designer rectifies this.

What are Salary Prospects?

In India, Depending on the employer and one's experience the salary, including bonuses and commission for assistant interior designers ranges between Rs. 30,000 to Rs.40,000 per month. For senior interior designers, the salary, including bonuses and commission is approximately Rs. 800,000 to Rs. 3,000,000 per annum.

How is Life?

Life for the newly starting interior designers is very hard because reputation and experience takes a while to build. However, once you get past the initial years, the career prospects are huge. From starting up your own firm and taking on various different projects, to being hired by big architectural firms to cope with the large project load they have, an  interior designer is in much demand due to the retail boom. Interior designers usually divide their time between the office and the on site location.

A large part of their time is spent in meetings with contractors, clients and suppliers, and there may be large amounts of travelling involved in this career. Interior designers are usually required to wear protective equipment such as safety hats when there is a lot of structural work involved. Since the design industry is a creative industry, the interior decorators are allowed to wear whatever they want, expressing themselves. Interior design is about 90% networking, marketing, selling, knowing the right people 7% paperwork and 3% design.

What Perks come along with this career?

Being an interior designer is a fun and creative job. There is no monotonous work as every single client has different expectations and this makes sure that the work keeps changing and is kept interesting. The work is also very rewarding because of the different number of options which an interior designer can specialize in. There are many different paths that an interior designer can take.

Moreover, the salary scope for an interior designer is very high, thus making it a very attractive field to enter. There is also a lot of advancement in the interior design career. You may start off as a junior designer and end up as a partner in a firm. Along with that, interior designing lets you be free and allows the ‘creative genius’ in you run wild.

Which Downsides are there in this career?

An interior designer has no fixed clientele. Only when new projects come about, will the interior designer get a chance to work. The industry is also fast moving, which means that the interior designer has to be aware of the different trends and fads to keep evolving their designs.

Customers may also be difficult in terms of convincing that your designs are the best. The interior designer has to be very confident about the design so that he/she can sell it to the client. Along with this, studying interior design is very expensive as well as difficult because of the constant portfolio reviews.

How is Competition?

Becoming an interior designer is not easy because the industry is closed. However, if you have the basic principles and the passion, you can become an interior designer. One way of entering the industry and creating a good impression with potential future employers is to get internships to gain real world knowledge. Between 2008 and 2018, the interior design employment was expected to grow from 19%-20% thus proving that the industry is growing.

Interior design does not have the structured career path or clear promotion-based approach found in many other industries. This is partly due to the very diverse nature of the design world and its liking for self-employment, but also because this is a creative industry. To a large extent, interior designers must make their own career – initiative, ambition, and individual skill and creativity are the key to success. Luck can be an important factor too.

Locations where this career is good?

Interior designing has a lot of scope throughout the world; UK, US, India etc.

Career Path

Over the years this field has become more specialised and employers give more importance to academic and professional background. Studying engineering or architecture before specialising in interior design can be helpful. Many design schools offer interior designing courses and some offer masters in fine arts with a specialisation in interior design

How to Become a Fashion Designer

There are as many different ways to start your career as a fashion designer as there are designs. Ralph Lauren started his business by selling ties through Bloomingdales while Michael Kors started by retailing his designs from a NY boutique. However the safest bet is to start a design career is to get a degree from a prestigious design school.

Fashion Designing is the most demanding career-oriented course among the other courses, where the one can explore their talent and creativity in the fashion world. In the country, the number of youths is showing their interest in this field. Moreover, keeping an eye on the current generation and their creativity, the National Institute of Fashion Technology has introduced various courses to make a wide option for the aspirants.

Before Applying To Fashion Designing School

Although there are a lot of colleges in India and abroad where you can study fashion designing, only a handful are prestigious schools that would really push your career. It is indeed very difficult to get into these prestigious schools as the competition is very high. Most schools require a basic passing percentage in 10+2 and either a written exam to test your aptitude or submission of your portfolio. A design institute will not teach you how to be creative. It can only teach you how to channel your creativity in the right direction. Basic knowledge of sewing and drawing is an additional advantage though it is not compulsory. The most important quality that any institute looks for in a candidate is the passion for fashion. The rest can be worked out.

What a Fashion Designing Institute Can Do for YoMost fashion designing courses are three to four years long. During this time you will learn how to implement your ideas and visions. You will have classes in drawing, studying colors, composition and form, pattern making, draping, sewing and cutting. One of the most important advantages of studying design in a fashion institute is that these institutes work closely with the industry. Most top institutes also have many prestigious grants and awards that are given to the best students. But the most important event remains the fashion show that takes place at the end of the course where all graduating students get to show their creations. These shows are attended by big names of the industry to scout new talent.

Another very important part of curriculum at fashion institutes is the business and marketing modules. As every industry gets more corporate driven than ever its very important for every aspiring designer to be able to manage the business of their brand, negotiate a contract and choose a business partner.

10 Awesome Tips To Crack CAT 2016 #TargetCAT2016!

With barely three and a half months in hand, the students appearing for Common Admission Test (CAT) seem to be confused about a lot of things- what to study, how to study, what is more important, what topics can be dropped, so on and so forth.

To clear away the aura of confusion, here's a list of 10 awesome tips to crack CAT, this year:

1) Analyse your strengths and weaknesses: Analyse your strong as well as weak suits in the respective areas (namely quant, verbal, logical reasoning, data interpretation) and ideally, start with the preparation of your weak areas and focus on making them your strong areas. Follow the five crucial steps listed below in the suggested order for sure-shot results.

Begin with the solved examples in the book
Then move onto the unsolved examples
After you are well versed with the examples in the book, test yourself further by taking as many mock tests as possible to get used to this Computer Based Exam(CBT)
Finally resort to previous years' CAT papers and monitor your progress
Thereafter, practice and practice and practice more

2) Be thorough with your fundamentals: During the last few days before the exam, the candidates should revise all the basic concepts. Revisions of the fundamentals of each topic are extremely crucial to secure a good score. It will enable you to consolidate your preparation for the exam. You should be confident and well-versed with the application of all your basic concepts.

3) Time versus Target: While preparing your plan of action for the CAT exam, fastidiously implement the concept of "time v/s target" i.e. completing any particular portion of a subject or topic in an assigned time period. Stick to the plan meticulously to secure the desired results. Do not be a procrastinator at any cost!

4) You need to put more work into your verbal section this year!: The verbal section of CAT is expected to be of a higher difficulty level this year. The candidates should therefore solve more complex versions of topics such as parajumbles and reading comprehensions so that they do not end up getting intimidated by the length and intricacies of the questions in this section during the actual exam.

5) Get well-versed with the major changes in the CAT 2015 paper pattern. This year CAT is going to have three sections instead of two:
1. Quantitative Ability (QA) with 34 Questions
2. Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) with 32 questions
3. Verbal & Reading Comprehension (VRC) with 34 questions

The segregation suggests that candidates have no escape. It will be mandatory to attempt all sections and achieve the minimum required percentage in individual sections apart from the overall total to make it to any of the IIMs.
CAT 2015 also marks the introduction of certain subjective type of questions in the paper. Some questions in each section may not be of multiple choice type. Instead, direct answers are to be typed on the screen.

6) Acquaint yourself with the some other relevant changes: The actual time duration of the test is 3 hours (180 minutes) instead of the earlier 170 minutes. Each section has a time limit of 60 minutes. So the candidates need not worry about the possibility of getting carried away and unintentionally devoting excessive time to any particular section. Also, the candidates should remember that they cannot switch from one section to another section at any point. An on-screen timer would be available for the candidates to check how much time they are left with. An onscreen calculator would be embedded in the screen which could be utilised for any calculations in the paper. However, hardly any question in the paper would involve major calculations.

7) Practice your shortcuts well: Although CAT is traditionally a conceptual exam based on core fundamentals, being conversant with all the shortcuts would help you to solve various problems with greater speed, thus giving you an edge as compared to your competitors. So revise your shortcuts and know them as thoroughly as your fundamentals.

8) Beyond Studies: It is essential to study hard and spend a good number of hours daily on your exam preparation but for an hour or so in your daily timetable, make some space just for yourself. You can exercise in this time to keep yourself mentally, physically and emotionally fit; or you could also devote this time to engage in any extra-curricular of your choice. Eating healthy is also a critical aspect that needs to be taken care of while preparing for the examination.

9) Remember the larger goal: Apart from focusing on cracking the exam, you should not forget that excelling in this exam would bring you closer to your larger goal of making it big in the corporate world and that would, in turn, enable you to imbibe the much needed perseverance, dedication and grit required to ace the CAT.

10) A calm mind is the key: Lastly and most importantly, the candidates should not get nervous or hyper under any circumstances. A calm, composed and compartmentalized mind is extremely vital for cracking this exam.

Work hard, work smart and rock the CAT this year!
